Quote of the day April 18th 2009

"Mummy? Can one chain saw cut through another chainsaw?"

I'll admit I really had to think about this one for a while. I finally came to the conclusion that no it could not. Thoughts?

  1. I suppose if the chain was new and sharp enough it might have a chance, but it would be far more likely that both chains would break and you would die a horrible death. So no trying it!

  2. Absolutely! A chain saw "cuts" by applying friction. By rotating the chain quickly, a chain saw wears down the materials it seeks to cut. A metal chain saw could eventually cut through another metal chain saw - but the chain of the active chain saw would need to be replaced a few times before it was successful. Friction works both ways - it wears down the material to which is applied and also is worn down by it. Instead, a stronger material - like a diamond chain (yes, those diamonds) - could be used to cut through the metal with more ease.
